Restaurant Aquavit opened to immediate success in midtown Manhattan in November 1987. Three decades later, Aquavit continues to be one of New York’s most popular and highly esteemed dining destinations. A pioneer on the American dining scene, Aquavit remains the only world-class modern Nordic restaurant in the country. Chef Suchanan Aksornnan, nicknamed Chef Bao Bao, was born in the northernmost province of Thailand - Chiang Rai. There she grew up surrounded by greatness of nature, organic and fresh ingredients, and a wide variety of local foods. "This early exposure to food is one of the biggest reasons why I do what I do today," she continues.
"I've been always wondering this, what does authentic mean?" she asks," I spent a lot of time to craft my art without compromising. Food is not about classification; it's about TASTE (laughter). Come to Baoburg and I will prove it!" Then she showed a big smile.

April Bloomfield has spent most of her life in the kitchen and had the pleasure of working with some of the most revolutionary chefs before taking on a kitchen of her own. A native of Birmingham, England, April began her culinary studies at Birmingham College. From there, she went on to hone her craft through cook positions in various kitchens throughout London and Northern Ireland, including Kensington Place and Bibendum. It was under the guidance of Ruth Rogers and Rose Gray at The River Cafe where she learned to appreciate the beauty and simplicity of food.
Before moving to New York, April spent the summer of 2003 in Berkeley, California at the legendary Chez Panisse. In February 2004, April and restaurateur Ken Friedman opened New York City’s first gastropub, The Spotted Pig. Under April’s direction, The Spotted Pig has earned one star from the Michelin Guide for seven consecutive years, and since 2010, April & Ken’s The Breslin Bar & Dining Room also earned one star two years in a row in the esteemed guidebook. As Food & Wine Magazine’s ”Best New Chef,” April continues to receive widespread attention for her food. In fall 2010, she and Ken opened The John Dory Oyster Bar, which joined The Breslin at New York’s Ace Hotel and earned a glowing, two-star review from the New York Times. April’s first cookbook, A Girl and Her Pig, was published by Ecco in April 2012.

Bessou was conceived from a desire to share my family’s food traditions. My love of Japanese food comes from my mother, a passionate home cook who introduced me to the beauty and bounty of Japanese food. Meals were a way for her to teach me and my sister about our Japanese heritage. In summer we often enjoyed chilled inaniwa udon native to my mother’s hometown with all of the traditional accoutrements, and in winter we would gather in the kitchen, taking turns pounding rice into kiritanpo rice dumplings for her famous hotpot stew.
Our dishes are a modern take on everyday Japanese comfort food. Our ingredients are responsibly sourced and prepared with care, with a menu that is seasonal and changing year round.

Dimes’ ambitions were always bigger than its 18-seat former East Chinatown premises: part healthy (but not “health food”) restaurant, part New Age-y boutique, part hipster hangout, part brunch destination. Its move to a larger space nearby gains owners Alissa Wagner and Sabrina De Sousa not only additional seating but also a real gas-fired kitchen and full liquor license (wheatgrass margarita, anyone?). New menu additions include pitaya bowls (the dragonfruit alternative to açai), matcha sesame sweet buns, and nori wraps, plus bar steaks and whole fish for dinner. The new vegetarian restaurant Dirt Candy (not to be confused with the X-rated movie “Dirty Candy”) deserves a better name. According to the owner and chef, Amanda Cohen, vegetables are like candy from the dirt. Maybe, but there is nothing earthy about her nine-table East Village restaurant. The translucent white tabletops, the glass-panelled walls, the greenish lighting, and, most of all, the food evoke some utopian future where the people have renounced not just meat but also soil, in favor of brightly colored, hydroponically grown produce. - The New Yorker

Making a return to the Upper West Side is Middle Eastern restaurant Gazala’s Place, a Hell’s Kitchen spot that once had a popular location in the neighborhood. Chef-owner Gazala Halabi will bring her thin, springy pitas and other spiced fare to 447 Amsterdam Ave. between 81st and 82nd streets — the former Meatball Shop space, West Side Rag reports.
Halabi has made a name for herself with those aforementioned pitas, opening Gazala’s in 2007 to much critical acclaim. It was enough to expand to Columbus Avenue in 2010, but that location closed in 2015 for unknown reasons. While it was open, it was a popular destination in the neighborhood for the rare-in-NYC cuisine. Halabi cooks Druze fare, the cuisine of her hometown, known for its spreads like goat’s cheese labneh, baba ganoush, and hummus; salads with tomatoes, cucumbers, and and lots of herbs; and meatier fare like kebabs and spiced, skinless sausages. - Eater New York

Megan and Jen have been partners in life for the last 9 years. They met at Gottino, a small wine bar in Greenwich Village. Jen and her best friend Christie were regulars there and Megan was the sous-chef. Late one summer night, after months of getting to know each other (and some flirting!), Megan made her move on Jen over food truck burritos. They were sitting on a park bench at the corner of Hudson & Jane.
Five years later, they were married at Prospect Park in Brooklyn with their dog Charlie as ring bearer. Both Megan and Jen are passionate about food and friendship, so it was only natural they open up a space devoted to both. Hudson Jane is located on Myrtle Avenue in Brooklyn’s Fort Greene neighborhood, where they serve the community they have come to know and love over the past eight years.

The realities of foie gras production, which involve force-feeding duck or geese, have prompted chefs to seek more humane alternatives, from self-engorging birds to blending chicken liver with butter. But what if the best way to mimic the taste of this classic luxury is to do away with death altogether?
During a recent meal at Otway, an envelope pusher of a restaurant in Clinton Hill, a server ferried over a dessert plate of yeast semifreddo, a healthy-sounding combination that recalled bean burgers or kale smoothies.
Otway opened one year ago, born from the ashes of Tilda All Day, a venue that Safer and Welle ran with a third partner before a sticky breakup. The single room of a restaurant, at first glance, looks like any painfully chic American bistro. Imagine: soft lighting, brown wooden chairs, white walls, pressed-tin ceilings, an amaro cart, giant windows for performative brunching, cute little shelves sparsely packed with ornamental birds and plants. - Eater New York

When Rebecca Charles opened Pearl Oyster Bar there wasn’t a lobster roll to be found in Manhattan. Charles reinvented Maine’s signature sandwich and other seaside staples from fried oysters and pan roasts to lobster stew, chowders and blueberry crumble pie. Using a trained chef’s approach, she elevated what was previously thought of as simply “beach food.” Pearl, Rebecca’s version of the upscale lobster shack is the standard bearer for what has now become an international trend.

Pies 'n' Thighs

Pies ’n’ Thighs started in 2006, in the shadow of the Williamsburg Bridge. We took over a beer storage closet and transformed it into a tiny kitchen with six stools, serving huge donuts, two-napkin smoked pork sandwiches and salty, crispy fried chicken. The New York Times called the pies and the thighs “…a compelling combination, well executed and put forth with real heart—the sort of restaurant that’s hard to find, especially in the big city, but easy to love once found.”
We believe that comfort food speaks to everyone. We met as cooks at Diner, a nearby Brooklyn institution that has been the parent restaurant of many local favorites. We are inspired by classic American dishes, Mexican and Californian cuisine, and the Slow Food movement’s attention to ingredients.
We have been awarded Best Donut in New York by New York, Best Biscuits in New York by the New York Daily News, and Best Apple Pie and Best Fried Chicken in national surveys by Food & Wine and Bon Appétit.
Pig & Khao

“This is not Momofuku,” a diner said recently at Pig and Khao, a new restaurant on the Lower East Side. The distinction may seem obvious, but it bears repeating, since Pig and Khao displays many hallmarks of the empires created by both David Chang and this restaurant’s part owners the Fatty Crew (Fatty ’Cue, Fatty Crab). You’ve got your young chef dishing out irreverent takes on Asian street food: Leah Cohen, a “Top Chef” contestant, created the menu based on her travels to Thailand and the Philippines. Your casually hip setting: patrons sit on simple wooden benches and sip cans of Pabst Blue Ribbon while listening to Skrillex. And you’ve got your conspicuous references to the joys of eating animal fat. David Chang combined these elements to create a new breed of Asian-American comfort food, but at Pig and Khao, the formula doesn’t work as smoothly. - The New Yorker

Brunch is kind of a shitshow at Prune," a friend told me recently, and I really couldn't have cared less because I don't eat brunch. I can make my own eggs.
But since many New Yorkers primarily know this East Village mainstay for its Dutch pancakes and such, I forced myself out of bed at noon on Saturday and taxied over to Gabrielle Hamilton's famed restaurant. Standing outside were 26 souls, almost the full capacity of the venue, waiting for a chance to eat eggs Benedict. The weather was 42F. Not bad for a fifteen year-old spot.
This solo diner was accommodated within ten minutes, next to a trio of patrons who said they waited over an hour for bar seats. The bloody marys, of which there are 11, were awesome — tart, spicy, and, if you throw in $2 for a jerky swizzle stick, beefy. Then, for an improvement upon the pedestrian fruit plate, Prune turned a plain navel orange turned into something magical with vanilla and rose water — impressive and aromatic. Finally, there were butter fried eggs coated in breadcrumbs and flanked by spicy stewed chickpeas. It's not the type of dish you'd make yourself in the morning; in fact you'd probably pay good money for it in the evening. Maybe there's something to this ritual known as brunch. - Eater New York

Sylvia Woods, the “Queen of Soul Food,” was the founder and owner of the world famous Sylvia’s Restaurant, located in the historical village of Harlem, since 1962. Sylvia, born and raised on her mother’s South Carolina farm, had dreams at a very young age of marrying her childhood sweetheart Herbert and of one day trading in the cotton fields for the bright lights of New York City. Young and determined, Sylvia received her beautician’s license at night while attending Junior High School during the day and opened the first farmhouse salon in her hometown of Hemingway, South Carolina. Sylvia and Herbert met when she was eleven and he was twelve while picking beans after school.
In 1944, Sylvia married Herbert and started her journey towards a brighter future. Harlem called, and Sylvia answered, as she became a waitress at Johnson’s luncheonette. In 1962, after several years of dedicated service to her employer, Mr. Johnson recognized Sylvia’s entrepreneurial spirit and sold her the luncheonette. Julia Pressley, Sylvia’s mother, whom was a farmer and mid-wife, mortgaged her farm to loan her the money for the purchase.
The then small luncheonette which consisted of 15 stools and six booths, has now flourished into a family-owned enterprise which consists of: Sylvia’s Restaurant in Harlem, Sylvia’s Also, a full-service catering hall, Sylvia’s Catering and Special Events Division, a nationwide line of Sylvia’s Food Products, two deliciously amazing cookbooks, and ATOC, Inc., a real estate holding company.

Via Carota is the West Village gastroteca of cherished downtown chefs Jody Williams and Rita Sodi. Inspired by the 17th-century villa in the hills near Florence which Sodi once called home, Via Carota honors old-world Italian roots, life style, food and décor.
Their Village gastroteca is thoughtfully renovated: wooden floors reclaimed from an old gymnasium, vintage chapel chairs from England and rustic wooden cabinets filled with heirloom china. Servers wear crisp white shirts and long linen aprons, there are communal tables and even a private room tucked away amongst the wine bottles. Baskets of crusty bread and bowls of oranges are scattered throughout the sun drenched space. For bel tempo pleasure there are eight outdoor tables on the tree-lined sidewalk.
Located at 51 Grove Street in the West Village; Via Carota is just one block up from the couple’s other beloved restaurants Buvette and I Sodi. Via Carota is open all day long serving food and drink, early until late in a true gastroteca fashion.

The Spotted Pig rides on a coveted resume that could turn any hopeless restaurant into an esteemed establishment. First you have Mario Batali, who is the partner of April Bloomfield and Ken Friedman (the owners). No introduction necessary there on Batali’s part. Then you have April herself, whose background includes a stint at the famous Chez Panisse run by Alice Waters. For those of you that aren’t familiar with Chez Panisse, it’s the crown jewel of the slow food movement, where dining meets organic and fresh, locally grown ingredients. Rumor even has it that April worked with and came highly recommended by the awesome Jamie Oliver. Clearly, The Spotted Pig comes from a good pedigree. - Savory Bites
